Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials voiced outrage after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Sparked the Dispute
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in armed forces or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction
The video message appeared to provoke a heated reply from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader issued a joint announcement denouncing the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our nation with great loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical digital publications and recant his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement added.
Representatives' Strong Answer
The officials who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who love this country and swore an oath to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their protection as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this right away and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of Congress telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is unprecedented in American history."
The Republican leader also allegedly told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and determine all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary answered: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally encouraging."
