Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a new statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to support the former governor in communities where he maintains strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how important this election is,” the mayor remarked.

He added, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention globally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
