From Struggling to Imperfect – Is There Any Team Actively Seeking to Win the Big Game During This Campaign?

No major competition sells parity like the NFL: it’s the entire brand. But through ten games in this campaign, this doesn't represent a landscape that is equally balanced separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Rather, we see a situation where the bulk of franchises is simply fine.

NFC Standings Definition

Within the National Football Conference, for the most part, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (each holding 7-2 records) seem like the most well-rounded squads in football, and secured decisive victories on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 notwithstanding their difficulties maintain among the most gifted lineups throughout football, comparable to the Packers franchise (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (6-3), despite their uneven performances on offense and defense and navigating tension on their coaching staff, have demonstrated they can defeat strong franchises. For all five, one can readily put together a championship trajectory.

AFC Playoff Chaos

In the AFC however, championship race is thoroughly confusing. The current division frontrunners after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (five wins, four losses). Consider that carefully. No Chiefs presence. Not the Bills. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The usual contenders, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, display either significant personnel gaps or have suffered medical setbacks.

League Equality Design

To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. Yet observing the current division frontrunners in the American Football Conference still feels strange. Areas of each team meet championship standards, but not in their entirety. If you were asked to commit to your AFC title game selections right now, could you assuredly select any one of the current division frontrunners?

Franchise Analysis

Indianapolis Colts

First, examining Indianapolis, the signal-caller hasn't descended to complete disaster level. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He's reverting to giving away possessions and struggling against pressure. He was sacked seven times facing Atlanta in the weekend game, and had a five-minute stretch in which he threw an intercepted pass and fumbled three times. This comes after he committed turnovers five separate times versus Pittsburgh.

The Colts attack thrived early in the season because Jones avoided game-changing errors. Taylor along with the blockers mean the Colts are capable of overcoming some negative plays, like their German performance. Yet Jones going back to his previous error-filled form would terminate any playoff run.

New England Analysis

New England appears relatively comparable. Previously, they were league laughingstocks. Today, they stand as the league’s happiest surprise and the most successful franchise across the league following seven consecutive victories. Had it not been for losing due to fumbles a contest they should have won facing Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting a 9-1 record as the league's best. Last season, they were old and slow. Today they appear inexperienced, speedy and bold. However, we must acknowledge the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the most manageable schedule throughout football, yet vulnerabilities remain. Their quarterback has been sacked on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday appeared dangerous. With continued play, that punishment compounds.

Broncos Situation

The Broncos are eight wins similarly, and it still feels like they're nervously waiting. The Denver signal-caller has performed unevenly, with the attack struggling, while the defensive unit provides most of the responsibility. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also contending in the AFC West holding a 7-2 record, however, health issues affecting their protection unit will present challenges to achieve championship contention.

Pittsburgh Situation

Then we have the Steelers, somehow still leading their division notwithstanding receiving 25-10 by the Chargers during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations given his veteran status persistently appear. They’re 5–4 and holding on, but Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson and facing easier opponents, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have narrowed within a game of the Steelers, but how rapidly this occurred represents criticism toward the Steelers' uneven performances. The fact Baltimore began losing five of six and currently seem likely to claim the title speaks volumes regarding the complete conference.

Historical Favorites

The Ravens represent a segment among three elite teams – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who could still create the greatest concern in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, however, both franchises continue to self-destruct.

Bills Struggles

Last week, the Bills were riding high following victory over Kansas City. This weekend they encountered a particularly discouraging setback during the campaign. They didn’t just lose against Miami; they looked terrible, dropping a 30-13 road game. The Dolphins secured their first triumph versus Buffalo in over three years.
