Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor stated when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's current term as California's leader ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent
He has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would boost Democratic congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has invited attacks from political opponents.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested eliminating the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he declared, following a recent deadly accident in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused fatalities and casualties.
The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was withholding $40 million from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a recent release addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Polling Data and Future Prospects
A this month's survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, the governor remarked while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
