Iran Claims Assault on American Facility in Bahrain, Amid Regional Retaliatory Strikes.

Iranian forces say they have struck a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched missile attacks throughout the Middle East in response for a "massive" and continuing offensive against it by the US and Israel.

Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an zone near the main base of the American Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The full scale of any impact is unclear and the United States has remained silent.

Airspace Engagements

Elsewhere across the region, the UAE, Qatar and the State of Kuwait - all home to US military bases - said they have shot down missiles in their airspace.

In Doha, Qatar's defence ministry announced it had intercepted a number of projectiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the biggest US military installation in the Middle East.

Iran's Declared Retaliation

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said in a statement it was targeting US bases and assets as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the strikes on the Islamic Republic carried out by the US and Israel on Saturday morning.

That initial attack - executed at around 06:15 GMT - has so far struck sites linked to the Tehran's leadership, with US President Donald Trump calling on the people of Iran to rise up against the regime.

Regional Fallout

In the State of Israel, air raid sirens sounded nationwide after the Israeli military said it had identified an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The Ministry of Defence of the UAE said in a statement that the country has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"Emirati air defenses engaged the missiles with notable success and shot down a series of missiles," it added.

It said debris fell on a populated district in Abu Dhabi, resulting in some material damage and fatalities.

The US Air Force is stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
