An Echoing Storyline with a New Twist

This outlines the narrative, roughly, of the master of horror’s iconic book It (his best; no arguments). It is also the plot of Stephen King’s offspring Joe Hill’s recent horror doorstopper, in which six friends summon the ancient, utterly malevolent dragon the Dragon King from the Endless Night to help them defeat some baddies. Needless to say, their supernatural ritual backfires.

Celebrating a Family Lineage

The author launched his profession going to great lengths to avoid any connection from his famous father, using the pseudonym he continues to employ and avoiding meeting his agent (he possesses a strong similarity to his dad). But in this latest novel, he leans into it. There are lines that intentionally mirror some of King’s most famous (that classic opening line); a moment that evokes a recurring theme in King’s works (a battle of wits). In this epic story, the author rejoices in his family connection, and the audience revels alongside.

Meet the Protagonists

Returning to the group: most are pupils at the fictional Rackham College in the New England state. First is Arthur, academic and brilliant, deciphering historical enigmas in his leisure hours; Colin, affluent, sharp, and known for crushing those who oppose him; Donna and Donovan; the attractive the lovely Allie. And there’s Gwen, who remains outside their academic circle, but becomes a key part of their group as they dabble, partly convinced, somewhat doubtful, in arcane arts.

The Pivotal Ceremony

Our hero becomes, for reasons we don’t need to go into, obliged to take rare books from his beloved college library by a group of neighborhood thugs. This wounds his academic spirit, particularly as he’s made to take the library’s most valuable and disturbing publication: the logbook of occultist Enoch Crane (put to death “for trafficking with the devyll in 1703”; the binding is crafted from his flesh). Our Scooby gang read the journal, learn they can invoke what the author references as a armored demon” to aid our hero with his coercion issue – and spend the rest of the novel reaping the consequences. The dragon will undoubtedly remove those annoying regional antagonists, but they’ll have to choose a new sacrifice annually or fall prey to the beast. In the character’s own words: “You sow dragon’s teeth, all you get is more dragons.”

Genre Versatility and Inventive Range

Covering a generation, Hill also moves with effortless ease through various literary forms: as the companions endeavor to address the situation they find themselves in by, variously, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to sacrifice, or seeking means to slay the beast themselves, we move between page-turner to shadowy tale, covert operations to romance to horror. One particularly memorable shift was to a heroic journey, deep in the caves under the English county, a part infused with the Lord of the Rings author that was magnificently horrifying.

A Detailed Canvas of Dread and Courage

We encounter trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and internet antagonists, properly scary and perfectly brought to life. The story includes mystic weapons and deceptions, breath-taking moments of bravery and instances of terrible wickedness, both mortal and extraterrestrial. This is a remarkable achievement: a chilling book that is primarily a paean to the creative spirit, and to affection and camaraderie. “We needed a story to believe and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says the wealthy student as the allies sit around the table, preparing to summon their beast to life with the power of their thoughts.

As Hill puts it in his introductory quote: “Here be dragons”. Do not overlook this.
