New Year's Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Across the UK
Weather experts are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Continue Despite Warnings
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the Met Office.
Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be cold, making warm wraps essential, according to forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People should to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.
Temperatures Expected to Fall Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Alerts Activated
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this indicated the weather could to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is utterly paramount.
