Those A$150 Million Men Transforming a Highlight Machine
The NBA season begins now, marking the first time in a ten years that Australia's two most prominent hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are without a roster spot.
Their absence signals a transition period, as Australian backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for contending teams, with new nine-figure contracts making them some of the country's highest athletic earners.
But they are not alone. A group of 14 Aussies are expected to play for playing time around the league, including veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
Following protracted discussions with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey finally inked his new deal worth US$100 million (A$153 million) over four seasons recently. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is cheap for Giddey’s position and profile as a lead playmaker. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the 23-year-old begins this season with much to prove.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the beginning of last season, he watched as his former squad charged to the title in his absence. As the Chicago aim to make the playoffs in the weaker Eastern Conference, he will need to show his shooting and defence are elite-level or else he may slide towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Targets Further Growth
The guard agreed to the same deal as his counterpart recently, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Hawks player's career has taken off in the city following his departure from the Pelicans. He is now praised as one of the league’s best defensive specialists, and led the league in steals with 3.0 spg – over one full steal per game higher than the tally of second place.
Playing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be successful this season as a secondary ballhandler and elite defender as long as the team advance to the postseason. But if he can elevate his long-range game, which was below league average last year, and continue to develop his passing and driving, Daniels could become one of the league’s most well-rounded players.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Pacers forward the rookie has emerged as a crowd favorite in the state following a series of spectacular slam dunks in pre-season. His athletic displays led league figure Pat Beverley to describe him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be on the table.
Following playing just 8 mpg per game over 50 appearances in his rookie campaign, the former college student is in the running for a Indiana rotation that might favor young players following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor A Long-Range Threat
Guard the Sydney native fell in the NBA Draft all the way to the second round, where Eastern Conference contenders the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavaliers are front-runners to make the Finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be rare for a first-year player taken in the second round to see much court time. But the Australian has earned minutes in exhibition play, and his pro-level shooting offers him a chance to make an impact.
Playing Time Squeeze Looms for Experienced Group
Seasoned centre Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting five position in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the opening of the season after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see regular minutes if the team find themselves competitive. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is likely to be used as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's summer shoulder procedure has resulted in him without a timeline to come back. The 24-year-old still has a contract for the upcoming year, but won’t want to allow his teammates at the developing Charlotte an excessive head start. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has missed important exhibition chances in the Mavericks.
Australian NBA Players On the Fringe
Additionally, there are those who are unlikely to see a lot of, if any, game action this year. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is back in Minnesota, but appears to be little more than a big brother ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be developed by the Wolves through their affiliate team. Fellow rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be aiming to earn playing time with his compatriot for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
Should anyone question Patty Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a training clip shared on his accounts over the weekend, demonstrating the veteran remains in form and determined on landing another league deal.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an break in his homeland, going fishing and playing with a football. Even though he took to Instagram last month to reject rumors he was done, the 29-year-old – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
